Garbage Man

How's it going, happy to see you!
It's been a long time since I talked to someone outside of my mirror
Not that I can't hold conversation
But I find talking to myself makes my intentions that much clearer
So I'd appreciate if you could spread the word
Mine's not the strangest story that you ever heard
My name is Garbage Man (Garbage Man)
I live in a truck bay (a truck bay)
I got my first job for being too early
And lost my second for coming too late
So I wander the hills of blue Virginia
Not a dollar in my hand
Go tell your friends that you know a guy called Garbage Man
I got me a good education
Like how to know the time of day just looking at the sunny weather
'Course I'm not so sure when it's raining
It's not a problem that has stopped me from my guessing altogether
Someday, I'd like to be up on a big marquee
With all those lights announcing me:
My name is Garbage Man (Garbage Man)
I live in a truck bay (a truck bay)
I got my first job for being too early
And lost my second for coming too late
So I wander the hills of blue Virginia
Not a dollar in my hand
Go tell your friends that you know a guy called Garbage Man
My name is Garbage Man (Garbage Man)
I live in a truck bay (a truck bay)
I got my first job for being too early
And lost my second for coming too late
So I wander the hills of blue Virginia
Not a dollar in my hand
Go tell your friends that you know a guy called Garbage Man
Go tell your friends that you know a guy called Garbage Man

In a tower on an island long ago
Or at least, that's what the storybooks all say
There were Daedalus and Icarus imprisoned
And they tried to think of some way to escape
Then they saw an eagle soaring overhead
And the father was inspired and he smiled
He had lots of feathers and had lots of waxes
So he built wings for himself and for his child
Splash, splash, splash go the waves down below
Flap, flap, flap go the wings in the sky
"Careful son," Said the father "Don't you know
That you shouldn't fly too low or fly too high"
When they started off, the sun was beating down
And the breezes sent a flutter through their plumes
So the boy became infected with elation
Never thinking that he'd bring about his doom
And he flipped and flapped and raced right through the clouds
For the first time feeling absolutely free
But he didn't feel the wax begin to soften
And his father's shouts were drowned out by the sea
Splash, splash, splash go the waves down below
Flap, flap, flap go the wings in the sky
It can't last, because everybody knows
That a human boy was never meant to fly
Though the sun was warm and kissed his shining face
It was hot enough to tear his wings apart
So his freefall kept on going, going, going
Though he didn't really notice at the start
And the water took him in with open arms
As his father watched with horror from above
As his son was dragged into the salty ocean
Shining underneath the sun that that boy loved
Splash, splash, splash go the waves down below
Flap, flap, flap go the wings in the sky
It can't last because everybody knows
That a human boy was never meant to fly
Splash, splash, splash go the waves down below
Flap, flap, flap go the wings in the sky
It can't last because everybody knows
That a human boy was never meant to fly

The first time that I rolled to a stop into the back of someone's car at a stoplight, we got out and I apologized, except I didn't get their contact information but they got mine since I was the one who caused the accident. Then I cried in a Giant parking lot.
But up in New England, they're better known as Stop-N-Shop
My car was fine and their car was fine
I didn't get their contact information but they got mine
Anyway, I'm saying this because I tell everyone who rides in my car the whole history of my driving life so they know what they're getting into, and someday you might ride in my car so I figured I'd better get that story out of the way to move on to whatever comes next
So you won't be surprised if I ever get into a wreck
I'm putting all my cards out on the table
Because I like you
I can't get rid of the dents in my car

(Icarus) Don't Be Blue
02:59
|
|||
Icarus, don't be blue
You should smile like you used to
When the world wasn't so wide
You feel afraid, you're terrified
O Icarus, so am I
Icarus, there's no end
But tomorrow you'll start it all again
And you can make it up anew
I always do
And so do you
And when you lose your way, please be kind
You'll set your own pace. Take your time.
I don't mind.
Icarus, don't be blue
You should smile like you used to
When the world wasn't so wide
You're by my side,
So am I

Tables lined with cutlery
Ads for something on TV
Crashing in the kitchen, there's a fox out in the yard
Early morning paper trucks
Hospitals with parking spots
Fragile crystal flutes that clutter up the garbage can
Broken glass, broken glass
Why do some things change so fast
What was now's already in the past
Broken glass, broken glass
Why do some things change so fast
What was now's already in the past
Now I trace my face with age
All the things that looked the same
Function lives long after all my thoughts are out of style
Dare I say, I've done enough
Dare I say, it's not too much
You're the taste of morning in my early Sunday mouth
Broken glass, broken glass
Why do some things change so fast
What was now's already in the past
Broken glass, broken glass
Why do some things change so fast
What was now's already in the past
I didn't wanna hurt you
I didn't know you'd bleed
When you touched the edge of me
Broken glass, broken glass
Why do some things change so fast
What was now's already in the past
Broken glass, broken glass
Why do some things change so fast
What was now's already in the past
Broken glass, broken glass
Why do some things change so fast
What was now's already in the past
Broken glass, broken glass
Why do some things change so fast
What was now's already in the past

The Robot Song
03:11
|
|||
Some people think that I'm a robot
Obviously I am not one of them
Because if I was, there'd be a paradox
Where I could not be both a person who thinks I'm a robot
And be a robot
But still, my mechanical tendencies
Lead certain people to believe I'm automaton
A synthetic consciousness
And maybe I am, but you'd think that they'd make me better than this
I have all these theories in my head about the reason something's off
So I won't be that surprised to find out I'm a robot
Some people think I'm an alien
Hanging around among them to collect data for higher intelligence
And maybe they're right
Since the notes that I take on the humans sound sort of alien
Like my observations of sympathy
And whether or not they expect me to replicate
Behaviors that puzzle and fascinate
And how I pretend that I understand everything they say
I have all these theories in my head about why I'm not quite like my friends
So I won't be that surprised to find out I'm an alien
Wouldn't it be nice and neat to know that I'm not made to be a thing that seems so out of reach for me?
Sometimes I think that I'm a robot
Obviously I am not
I understand
I know I'm not an alien
But still it remains that I can't explain - maybe that's just human.
I have all these theories in my head to pretend that nothing's wrong
Maybe I'm not that surprised since I've known all along
But I won't be that surprised if I am
But I won't be that surprised if I am
An alien
Or a robot

The first time that I broke up with somebody we were at a party where I had a minor panic attack so we escaped up to my room and I told her all about my hesitations when I saw her because I thought that I might not be interested in a romance kind of way.
And she looked up and told me that she felt the same.
We laughed it off, now we never talk
And that was the only relationship that I ever had to break up
But these days, I'm afraid to open up 'cause I don't feel like I love very often, so when people ask me out I knee-jerk have to turn them down because I'd rather them feel bad right now than break their heart much later after stringing them along.
Because too many times I feel fine before I learn something's wrong.
I'm putting all my cards out on the table.
I think you're worth it.
I can't get rid of the dents in my heart.
So I'm putting all my cards out
And I'll finally stick my head out
And I'm hoping I can trust you
I can't get rid of the dents in my car

There Is A Rose

|

There is a rose in my garden sweet
In my garden sweet there is a rose
I tell it of my lover, and it grows
My garden lives here inside of me
Inside of me my garden grows
So in my heart, I cultivate your rose

Fearless Ivan
01:48
|
|||
Fearless Ivan, lion tamer
Now that the circus has no lions
Only the horses, and Ivan doesn't
Know how to ride a horse in the circus
Our ringmaster says he's fired
But in the circus that just means
He'll climb in the cannon and be a human cannonball
And all the crowds will cheer and scream for him
He's flying overhead
But in his dreams he's taming lions
And he's on the ground instead
Elissandra does contortion
Fits herself inside a suitcase
Wishes that she was on the trapeezes
But when she tried she couldn't find the rhythm
So, in a skintight suit she folds herself
Into a thousand shapes
And watches with envy as the trapeezes swing above
And all the crowds will cheer and scream for her
She ties herself in knots
But in her dreaming she's trapeezing
With the other acrobats
Doctor Monday, former juggler
Once was a clown but then got amnesia
Only forgetting how to juggle
But that's a skill you need to be a juggler
Our ringmaster says I'm fired
But this time he means
I need to leave my circus life and my circus job
No more the crowds will cheer and scream for me
Throwing things so high
But I can't sleep so I don't dream
And I think why (oh why oh why)?
I don't know where to go from here
So this is my goodbye
To Fearless Ivan (goodbye)
Elissandra (goodbye)
All the clowns I once befriended (goodybe, goodbye)
If we ever meet again (goodbye, goodbye)
O if we ever meet again (goodbye, goodbye)
I hope you'll walk up and say hi

Mother of All Monsters
04:26
|
|||
Mother of all monsters
Shackled in the deep
Cut into a thousand pieces
Scattered to the people's feasts
How did it happen that the violence of a man can even kill the great leviathan?
Who has burned the walls down?
Who brings this disease?
Leave behind you no survivors
Say you've set the people free
When will you discover what is mercy to a man?
Or is it so late that you no longer can?
Lay down your killing machines
What have they brought you that you wanted?
Are you happy? Is this Heaven? Is it anything you need?
Or are you farther from the end than when you started?
It hurts you more than it hurts me
Does every soul you take appear inside your dreams?
Did you know you're not alone? The way you act
You're on your own
Lay down your machines.

Don't Drag Me Down
02:31
|
|||
Come all you pretty girls, and any other folks too
I've got a tale to tell to you
I'll try not to preach, so gather around
And listen how the Devil tried to drag me down
It was August at the time, and the sun beat hot
I was walking all alone until I had to stop
When the Devil tipped his hat "How'd you do?" said he
"It's finally time for you to come with me"
Oh, don't drag me down
Oh no, don't drag me down
I've worked real hard so you can't have me
Oh no don't drag me down
Well, I tried to run away but he's too fast
And tackled me down into the near dry grass
I said "I hear you're a betting man
So I'd like to make a wager for my life if I can"
Oh, don't drag me down
Oh no, don't drag me down
I've worked real hard so you can't have me
Oh no don't drag me down
He thought for a minute, then began to grin
Said "honey, there ain't a bet I can't win
I'll beat you in a second, and when I'm through
It's down for me and down for you"
Oh, don't drag me down
Oh no, don't drag me down
I've worked real hard so you can't have me
Oh no don't drag me down
Well, the game was simple: I bet my lot
That my soul was clean, not a single spot
When he looked inside his blood turned cold
'Cause I didn't have a stain since I don't have a soul
Oh, don't drag me down
Oh no, don't drag me down
I've worked real hard so you can't have me
Oh no don't drag me down
Well, the story ends with the Devil gone away
And I'm still living to this day
No matter if you're sitting in saint or sin
Don't worry 'bout the Devil, 'cause he can't get in
Oh, don't drag me down
Oh no, don't drag me down
I've worked real hard so you can't have me
Oh no don't drag me down
Oh, don't drag me down
Oh no, don't drag me down
I've worked real hard so you can't have me
Oh no don't drag me down
